Nest - Nest EP
I do a lot of snooping around on other blog sites and music review sites from day to day and when I find an interesting or unique sound, I like to write the band to see if I can get a copy of their work. One of these situations happened a couple days ago with Nest and their new EP. What I didn't expect was for the band to respond saying that they were familiar with this site. Small world. Nest is a Los Angeles based five piece which delivers elegant instrumentation and the alluring vocals of Ayana Haviv. Their aim is to seduce unsuspecting ears with tales of the heart, and their aim is true. I am of the opinion that there is always room on my shelf for songs about love and endearing romance and this EP makes for a wonderful addition. A nicely performed debut from super friendly people. That's just my cup of tea.

Nic Garcia - The Desperate Ones
After getting a hot tip from An Aquarium Drunkard, I hopped on over to Yer Bird Records to see what all the buzz was about with Nic Garcia. I liked what I was hearing and kindly requested a copy of The Desperate Ones. The opener, cleverly titled "Song One", enhanced my suspicions that I was going to be listening to a Nick Drake tribute act, with its instrumental opener reminiscent of Bryter Layter's opener song. Not that there is anything wrong with getting a few inspirational pointers from the likes of The Drake, but Nic Garcia steps up by throwing a little pop sensibility into the brew. There is plenty of acoustic guitar stylings to go around, but the background keyboards on several tracks is what stands out to me the most. I question myself on this one but, I also think I hear a hint of Smog in some of the song structures. Maybe not. Much thanks go to An Aquarium Drunkard for directing me to Yer Bird's front door and I hope to see great things from this new label in 2006.
